Magnetic polydomain liquid crystal elastomers – synthesis and characterisation

چکیده
Although liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) are a fascinating class of materials with interesting thermomechanical properties their own, the aim is to enhance performance or add new features, e.g. response external stimuli. The generally weak organic can be significantly intensified by mixing nano-sized magnetic particles into host polymer matrix. An alternative approach chemically coupling nanoparticles elastomer. We achieved this bonding functionalised nanoplatelets backbone main-chain LCE and obtained polydomain elastomers. measured magnetisation curves in samples, which were exposed either small large fields – being consequence partial particle reorientation moment flipping. In contrast field remanent reset zero heating sample, samples flipped within platelets cannot reversed original state. Coupling mechanical shows slight magneto-elastic at elevated temperatures significant inverse effect: caused stretching almost equal an field.

Dynamic Theory of Polydomain Liquid Crystal Elastomers.
When liquid crystal elastomers are prepared without any alignment, disordered polydomain structures emerge as the materials are cooled into the nematic phase. These polydomain structures are often attributed to quenched disorder in the cross-linked polymer network. As an alternative explanation, we develop a theory for the dynamics of the isotropic-nematic transition in liquid crystal elastomer...

PREFACE Liquid crystals are unusual materials. As their name suggests, they inhabit the grey area between liquids and solids. They have long range orientational order, typically of the unique axes of their component rod-like or plate molecules. Spatial variations of this average direction of molecular orientation are resisted by so-called curvature (Frank) elasticity. On the other hand liquid c...

The need for mechanical manipulation during the curing of conventional liquid crystal elastomers diminishes their applicability in the field of shape-programmable soft materials and future applications in additive manufacturing. Here we report on polymer-dispersed liquid crystal elastomers, novel composite materials that eliminate this difficulty. Their thermal shape memory anisotropy is imprin...

We consider the equilibrium stress-strain behavior of polydomain liquid crystal elastomers (PLCEs). We show that there is a fundamental difference between PLCEs cross-linked in the high temperature isotropic and low temperature aligned states. PLCEs cross-linked in the isotropic state then cooled to an aligned state will exhibit extremely soft elasticity (confirmed by recent experiments) and or...
متن کاملRupture of Polydomain and Monodomain Liquid Crystal Elastomer
Liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) has been recently explored extensively to make diverse active structures and devices. Depending on synthetic process, LCE can be made either polydomain or monodomain when ambient temperature is below isotropic clearing temperature. In the applications, LCE may be subjected to large mechanical stretch or force and break apart. The capability of predicting the ruptu...
